When to Report Animal Cruelty?

Every animal’s situation is unique, so this is not an all-encompassing list. However, you should report animal cruelty if the animal:

  • Is Denied Clean Water. Animals must have access to clean, sanitary water at all times.
  • Is Unfed or Underfed. If you discover an animal that is extremely thin, has bones showing, or is significantly underweight, please report animal cruelty.
  • Shows Signs of Physical Harm or Disease: An animal that has noticeable wounds or sickness should be reported as animal cruelty unless they are being treated.
  • Is Ungroomed: If an animal’s fur or nails are negatively affecting their quality of life, it should be reported as animal cruelty. Nails that are too long, fur that is extremely matted, and fur that is infested by fleas and other parasites can all be considered animal cruelty.
  • Lives in Poor Conditions: For example, you should report animal cruelty if an animal is trapped in a cage or kennel where they do not have enough space to turn around or move comfortably. Likewise, any animal kept outside should have sufficient shelter from the elements, and no animal should be trapped in a space covered in urine, feces, or items that could hurt them. The area where the animal is kept should be safe for them.
