Houston Humane Society Expands Its Mission

When you think of animal adoption, dogs and cats may come to mind first. But across Texas, horses, donkeys, pigs and other farm animals also need safe, loving homes. That’s where the Houston Humane Society is stepping in, expanding its mission to give rescued livestock a second chance.
One of Greater Houston’s largest nonprofit animal welfare organizations, the Houston Humane Society has long provided temporary shelter for farm animals. Now, it is committed to their long-term care, rehabilitation and adoption, with a special focus on equines and livestock rescued from abuse, cruelty and neglect.
The program’s expansion began in 2024 and officially launched in February 2025. Each animal receives specialized care tailored to its physical and emotional needs, helping prepare it for a healthier, happier future.
“This program marks an exciting milestone for us,” says Princess Bednarski, livestock manager for Houston Humane Society. “All farm animals deserve loving, safe environments where they can thrive.”
If you’re considering welcoming a farm animal into your life, responsible adoption starts with making sure you’re ready to meet its unique needs. In collaboration with Bluebonnet Animal Rescue Network, the Houston Humane Society has developed behavioral and medical assessments to evaluate each animal’s readiness for adoption. These evaluations help ensure a smoother transition into a new home and a better chance of lasting success.
The organization works with law enforcement to rescue livestock from cruelty and abuse cases and also accepts farm animals through owner surrenders.
