From Neglect to Nurture: 42 Guinea Pigs, 12 Rabbits, and 26 Birds Rescued from Hoarding Situation

Earlier this month, BARC Animal Enforcement officers responded to an eviction call—but what
they found behind the door was heartbreaking. Inside the home was a severe hoarding
situation: 42 guinea pigs, 12 rabbits, a tank full of small fish, and 26 exotic birds were
discovered living in overcrowded, unsafe conditions. Outside, 35 chickens, including three
roosters, were also found on the property, bringing the total number of animals in desperate
need of help to over 100.

Among the most vulnerable were the birds. Many were suffering from long-term neglect. Some
had overgrown beaks and nails, others were malnourished, and a few were even missing toes.
One African Grey parrot had a painful wound on his wing that required immediate medical
attention. Thankfully, all the birds were signed over to us the very next day.

Once they arrived at the Houston Humane Society, our team sprang into action, led by our
incredible staff, Dr. Graham, and a dedicated vet student named Arisa. These birds, once
forgotten and neglected, were finally receiving the care and compassion they deserved.

As the weeks passed, we began to see their true personalities shine.

Bonnie and Clyde, our playful Hahn’s Macaws, love to dance and frequently say “hi,” “bye,” and
“I love you.” Rain and Bo, two charming parrots, whistle every time someone walks by. Lime
insists on daily baths in his water bowl, while Pineapple is learning to take short walks with the
help of a perch. And Snow the cockatiel greets each morning with a cheerful whistle, as if to say
hello to a brand-new day.

These resilient birds are now eating fresh veggies, building bonds with one another, and most
importantly, healing. They’re finally safe.

We’re incredibly grateful to BARC for rescuing them, and to our community for continuing to
support us as we care for every rescued life. Because of you, these animals now have a second
chance.

Many of the birds will soon be available for adoption.
