How to Support Pet Rescue Efforts in Houston Beyond Adoption

While adopting a pet is a great way to provide a beloved animal with a new home and place to receive the love and care they need, it’s not always a viable option for many. So, what can someone who doesn’t have the time or space for a pet do to help pet rescue efforts in their local communities?

  • Volunteering: One of the classic ways to contribute is through devoting some of your time to volunteering at a local shelter. Every pet requires different methods of care, which means that those working at a shelter are constantly busy with a wide range of tasks. An extra pair of hands is a big help when it comes to feeding, cleaning, and walking the animals. Shelters often need additional help completing paperwork and other administrative tasks! Become a volunteer.
  • Donate: Donating to shelters is a vital and direct way to support their efforts. Most shelters provide one-time or monthly donation payment options, but if you can’t donate in the form of money, supplies can also be donated. To know what would make the biggest impact, it’s worth contacting your local shelter and asking about what specific items they need. Donate now.
  • Foster: Due to many shelters being overcrowded, fostering a pet until they find their new forever home can provide more space for animals who need more intensive care. Fostering also helps improve the chances of an animal being adopted, as it reduces their stress, helps build their social skills, and keeps them safe from diseases. Become a foster.
  • Get Creative: Many people host fundraisers in support of local animal shelters and clinics. Aside from hosting and attending fundraisers, you can boost shelters’ social media, organize community dog walks, make toys or blankets to donate, or set up a donation station in a local, high-traffic area.
