Lost Pet Scam Warning for Houston Area Pet Owners

We’ve been made aware of a dangerous scam targeting families searching for lost pets. Scammers, posing as representatives of Houston Humane Society, are calling caregivers, claiming to have the injured animal and pressuring families to send money immediately so the pets can be returned safely.

This is NOT Houston Humane Society. We follow standard procedures for reuniting lost pets and would never demand money to unite a pet with its family. Legitimate communication will always come directly from Houston Humane Society staff. If you receive a call and are unsure, contact us directly at 713-433-6421. 

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:

• Verify – Call or text us directly at 713-433-6421 if you receive a suspicious message.
• Never send money – We never demand payment to return lost pets.
• Report scams – If you’ve been targeted, report it to local authorities.
