We love updates from happy families! This one came from Mochi's human sister:
So Mochi is actually my mom’s dog. Her name is Consuelo, or Connie. This past May, she had major spine surgery and has been in recovery since, and also, about a month ago, she unfortunately suffered from a minor stroke, and we found a small aneurysm in her brain.
One of the things her doctors suggested to help keep her motivated and active was to have a pet! It had been about three years since our last family dog, Kai, a chocolate lab, had passed of old age at 14 years old. We also adopted her from a shelter as a puppy. It hit us hard, but I think we were ready to welcome another pet again.
My mom suggested that we check out HHS since we live pretty close, and I had told her, “there’s no way that you’re walking out without a dog.”
And she was just like, “I don’t know… let’s just check out who is there.” The visit was totally unplanned!
We met with another pup at HHS initially and, while sweet, he was just too high energy for my mom to handle while she works on her recovery and mobility again. A lady from HHS had suggested we meet with Loba.
After some time in a meet-and-greet room (she mainly just played with the tennis balls, lol), we went on a walk with her. My mom immediately loved how gentle Loba was on a leash. She was calm and walked at her pace, which was exactly the companion she needed for her current state of health. She couldn’t risk being pulled on a leash, so she felt comfortable and trusting of Loba, and that was a great sign.
We decided to foster for two weeks, but I think we knew we would end up adopting Loba from the first day we brought her home. I was a little scared since it was a big, unplanned change, but seeing your ‘adopt a pet today’ sign with the chocolate lab at the front desk made me feel like it was a sign from Kai somehow, so I decided to go with it too and was excited.
My mom basically changed overnight after bringing Loba home. She went from taking maybe less than 100 steps a day in the house due to pain and lack of motivation to taking thousands of steps a day with Loba (now Mochi!).
We love how playful and smart she is. She’s a sassy dog but also very sweet, and she has brought laughter back to our home. We love how social and friendly she is to people, kids, and other dogs, but at the same time, she keeps a cautious eye out for us at home and in public. I feel reassured when she’s around. I know people always say that by adopting from a shelter, you’re saving the animal, but Mochi definitely saved us as a family.
She now enjoys her daily walks, at least twice a day, playing fetch, wearing costumes, visiting parks, and going on our outings and shopping trips to local pet stores. She also, of course, has a large collection of tennis, squeaky, soccer, and other balls since we know that’s her favorite kind of toy.
Although it wasn’t planned, we are so thankful that we decided to visit HHS three weeks ago. We now have a very special addition to the family. She has brightened our days so much in such a short amount of time, and I will always be thankful that Mochi has taken to us as much as we have to her.
Oh, and about her new name: Mochi Loba Ramsay.
Mochi, my mom picked (we love BTS, so she named her after her bias/fave member, lol). Loba is, of course, to bring her shelter name with her, and Ramsay is because of Gordon Ramsay, who also wears a white coat and helps people in need. 😂
