Peanut and Pumpkin’s Happy Tail

We have an exotic Happy Tail that we are excited to share with you this week!

 

“When our sweet degu, Zelda, passed away, my husband and I knew we had to find a new colony mate for our precious surviving degu, Kelly.

 

We searched far and wide, looking for a needle in a haystack (AKA a female degu around 4 years old) and lo and behold, at the Houston Humane Society we found not one but TWO needles in a haystack when a search turned up five year old degu sisters Peanut and Pumpkin!

 

We filled out the adoption application, which was very thorough (as it should be!) and waited. The next morning, we got an email that our application had been approved! 

 

Living so far away (4 hours!) we knew we’d have to plan a special trip to meet them and hopefully bring them home. We explained our situation to Sadie, who was very supportive, and about a week later we were on our road trip to Houston.

 

When we arrived to meet Peanut and Pumpkin, we noticed that they were both familiar and comfortable with the humane society staff, which shows that they were treated well and shown affection during their stay there.

 

After a few weeks of gradual introduction, we successfully moved Peanut and Pumpkin into the enclosure with Kelly.

 

They are now a trio degu colony, and Kelly has come out of grieving her former sister. Being alone can literally shorten a degu’s lifespan, so being able to give Kelly two new sisters around the same age to colonize with has literally saved her life.

 

That would not have been possible without the Houston Humane Society taking in Peanut and Pumpkin, and caring for them so well. So many shelters and rescues only take cats and dogs, but the research and footwork that the Houston Humane Society put into caring for two niche exotic critters saved three lives, and we can not thank them enough!”
