October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and our Community Impact Director Greg Evans sat down with Chelsea Edwards of Fox 26's Chattin' with Chelsea to talk about the connection between domestic violence and animal abuse and how survivors can get help for themselves and their pets.
Most pet owners in domestic violence shelters report that their abuser has threatened or harmed their pets. In fact, abusing pets becomes a weapon used by the abuser, another way for them to hurt their victim.
On average, it can take a survivor up to eight tries to leave an abusive relationship, but when animal abuse is involved, it can take as many as 50 incidents before a survivor even calls the police. (Phil Arkow, National Link Coalition)
