Brigitte started volunteering at Houston Humane Society in 2022, but her work with animals goes back to 1995.

Over the years, she certified many of her own dogs as therapy dogs, volunteering with them “in elderly homes, hospitals, and schools, bringing sunshine where there is darkness.”
At Houston Humane Society, Brigitte loves spending enrichment time with the shelter dogs.
“Every week is different: snuffle mats, peanut butter on the walls 😊, one on one training session, quiet for treat….anything to entertain and relax our dogs so that they are happier and less stressed.”

She’s also an Orientation Lead, showing new volunteers the ropes and helping them feel comfortable working with dogs on their first day.
“For many animals, humans have not been so kind. My job as a volunteer is to make them understand that we are here to help them, make their life more enjoyable while they are with us and prepare them for their forever home.”
Brigitte knows firsthand what a difference people can make.
“My dog June [adopted from Houston Humane Society] was a cruelty case who was not doing well at the shelter and regressing. I took her in and we learned to trust each other. She is a great and well-behaved dog now.”

For Brigitte, the animals aren't the only ones who benefit from volunteering. “I have always said that I volunteer in big part for myself.”
