What to Do When You Find Kittens

If you come across a litter of kittens with no mom in sight, your first instinct might be to scoop them up and bring them to safety. It comes from a good place, but it may not be what’s best for them.

Take a moment, pause, and assess the situation.

Step 1: Check for Immediate Danger

Are the kittens injured or critically sick? If yes, call 311 or your local animal control agency.

Step 2: Estimate Their Age

A kitten’s age helps determine what they need.

  • Eyes closed: Likely newborns who rely fully on their mom
  • Eyes open and moving around: A bit older, but still need maternal care
  • Playful and active: More independent, but not ready to be on their own

Step 3: Look for Mom

Do you see the mom or a nest nearby?

If yes… a kitten’s best chance of survival is with their mom. Leave the kittens where they are.

If you want to help, you can:

  • Provide food and fresh water for mom
  • Make sure they have access to shelter
  • Contact animal control about spay and neuter when they are ready

If no… The mom may be nearby. She could be out looking for food or staying away because people are close.

Give her time to come back. Watch the area from a distance for a few hours.

Helpful tip:

Sprinkle a small ring of flour around the kittens. When you check back later, paw prints can show that mom has returned.

Step 4: When to Step In

If several hours pass and the mother does not return, it may be time to step in.

You can contact the foster team at Houston Humane Society for guidance and support. Email foster@houstonhumane.org or call 713-341-3318. Help depends on foster availability. If a foster home is not immediately available, our team can still provide supplies and advice to help you care for the kittens temporarily.

You’re Not Alone

Finding kittens can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to figure it out on your own. With the right steps, you can give them the best chance to grow, stay healthy, and find loving homes.

If you are able to open your home, even temporarily, fostering can make a lifesaving difference for kittens in our community. Apply to be a foster today.
