July 4th Pet Safety Tips

For many people, nothing beats lounging in the backyard on the Fourth of July with good friends and family—including furry friends. But, did you know a lot of pets get lost on July 4th due to the stress induced by the loud celebrations and fireworks?

"According to statistics, animal control officials across the country see a 30%–60% increase in lost pets each year between July fourth and sixth. In fact, July 5 is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters." - American Animal Hospital Association

Use these helpful tips to keep your furry friends safe at home this year.

  • Update phone number and address on your pet's tag and microchip
  • Keep your pet indoors during fireworks
  • Check your home for loose window screens, fence gaps, or places your pet could escape
  • Walk your pets before fireworks start so they can release any built-up anxiety
  • Play white noise while fireworks are going on for a distraction
  • Have your pet wear an anxiety vest specially designed to calm animals down during stressful situation
  • Make sure harmful substances and objects aren't accessible for nervous pets to ingest
